Clem Attlee’s 1945 government gave us the welfare state, the NHS, our education system, and all the trappings of a civilised society that we now take for granted. Yet Attlee himself is almost forgotten.

So I decided to write an Attlee play – and to make it a comedy. People who saw it were going to find out, not just that he was an able and determined leader, but he was also fun. In his own peculiar way.
